Feeling Stressed ? Check Out This Science Backed Stress Relief Song
Need a dose of stress relief ?. Researchers at UK-based Mindlab International wanted to discover what kind of music helps people relax. So they conducted a study where participants connected to sensors try to solve difficult puzzles — which naturally triggers a certain degree of stress. While solving the puzzles they had the participants listen to a huge list of songs while they measured their brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure and rate of breathing. The study found one song in particular (the one in the vid below) was able to reduce the signs of stress overall by 65%. Created by Marconi union the song was specially designed by musicians teaming up with sound therapists to carefully craft the right harmonies, rhythm, and bass line to reduce people’s stress indicators such as blood pressure and heart rate. It was so successful that participants reported becoming drowsy and this leads to the researchers advising against people listening to it while driving.
But How Does This Help Protect Or Enhance Your Gains?
Well, it has long been widely accepted that physical and mental stress is the enemy of muscle building. There are numerous ways that stress reeks havoc on gains and one of the main ones is with the reduction of anabolic hormones like testosterone and the increase of catabolic hormones like cortisol. When your body is stressed your adrenal glands release cortisol as an anti-stress and anti-inflammatory, unfortunately this also decreases protein synthesis, and can actually break down muscle as cortisol helps find alternate fuel for the body (an involuntary cave man response as starving naturally was one of the main causes of large amounts of stress) by breaking down muscle and prioritizing fat storage so your body has food reserves. Cortisol levels have such a great effect on muscle building that cortisol release has actually been the cause of the shortening of the recommended optimum duration of workouts as putting muscles under duress during a workout will naturally cause some secretion of cortisol. That is why unless your body’s ability to heal and recover is being enhanced via some sort of alternative means long workouts can actually be detrimental to optimum gains. Stress can also lead to insomnia and lack of motivation which also affects one’s ability to train.
